New Product Testing Machine

By All News, Industrial News, Marine News

CST has taken delivery of a new Instron universal testing machine.   This machine allows testing of our products in tension, compression, bending and torsion.  It can test to 250kN maximum load, various strain rates and also test cyclic loading.

Understanding the properties of materials and finished components is essential to correctly engineer products that offer the ultimate in performance and reliability.  We can obtain accurate test data on different fibre, resin and laminate configurations in house.

The machine will enhance CST’s existing quality assurance program and assist in ongoing research and development in the composites field.

Extreme Testing

The photos below show CST carbon fibre mast tip tested to destruction.

The tip was manufactured as a test product for the popular dinghy class utilising our filament winding technology. It shows the importance of manufacturing tubes with external 45 degree fibres which help stabilise and consolidate the internal unidirectional layers.

The application of external binding layers around a mast is centuries old and not to dissimilar to original techniques of wrapping rope around timber masts.

CST Supply Kimberly Clarke With Carbon Spindles

By All News, Industrial News

CST has just completed a project to supply four carbon paper unwind spindles to Kimberly Clarke’s baby care division.   The spindles will replace existing steel ones in order to reduce weight for easier handling and improved OHS.  The new spindles weigh just under 5kg compared with over 13kg for their steel counterparts.  The carbon spindles have been proof tested to twice their operational load and will shortly find their way onto the factory floor for a full evaluation.  Picture
