Nine national and one world championship wins for CST product has been a result of our strong focus on R&D and a close working relationship with some of the leading sailors in their respective classes.

Our congratulation goes to the crew of “Brydens Compensation Lawyers” who bounced back to win the windy 16ft Skiff Nationals sailed from Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The team skippered by Lee Knapton used CST’s new carbon fibre rectangular boom, spinnaker pole and fibreglass mast tips in both no1 and no2 rigs.

Current I14 world champions Archie Massey and Dan Wilsdon convincingly won the Australian I14 Championship with a string of first places. They too used the new rectangular boom and a modified configuration HM3 CST mast.

Rohan Nosworthy and crew Neil Tasker dominated the MG14 nationals with the lowest possible score of 7, after scoring a 1st place finish in every heat. They used the newly developed high modulus elliptical mast as did last year’s winner Hugh Tait, who placed 2nd.

Trevor Fay and Nathan Chipchase once again won the Cherub nationals with the CST HM one piece mast while the B14 National Championship was won by current world champions Guy Bancroft and David Grace.

Glen Ashby added yet another Australian Championship crown to his sailing portfolio winning the A-class and Brien Hennessy won the Javelin tittle sailing with crew Andrew Hackett.

Peter V. made a comeback to the NS14 class winning the Australian Championship with Tina Babbage while Nick Craig won the Phantom class in the UK.

Nathan Outteridge was also victorious walking away with the Australian Moth Championship, sailed as a warm up event before the Worlds. He then marched on to win the World Championship as well, sailed in a strong fleet of 113 boats. In fact this was undoubtedly the best quality fleet the Moth class has ever seen. Comprising of a number of World and Olympic champions as well as celebrated Americas Cup and Volvo Ocean Race sailors.

During the past few months CST Composites worked extremely closely with Nathan to develop a range of new masts specifically designed to suit the KA and MSL10 and MSL13 sails. No less that 21 prototype masts were made for the CST Moth Team, refining the bend characteristics to perfection in order to achieve the optimum luff curve match. Nathan also used the new CST rectangular boom which has proven to be stiffer and lighter than last season’s model.

All of the above products will be available as the part of our new 2011 range in the coming weeks.

CST Carbon Tiller Extensions Used By The World’s Best

By All News, Marine News

Australian Sailing Team member Tom Slingsby has been named the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year.

Tom already a multiple world champion in the Laser class is the first Australian to win this prestigious award.

CST Composites has been involved with the Australian Sailing Team since 2007 as the official equipment supplier. We decided to supply tiller extensions for Tom and the rest of the team including 49er World Champion Nathan Outteridge, in order to offer them a custom solution that would hopefully provide an edge over their opposition. Working with each team member we produced tiller extensions that are specific to their sailing style.

It is fantastic to see Australia’s best sailors achieve their goals with just a little over 18 months until the Olympics.

Nathan Outteridge Wins Moth Europeans

By All News, Marine News

In July, CST supported sailor Andrea Bonezzi was crowned the “European Contender Champion”, using CST’s HM Club mast.  Two weeks later CST spars have won yet another regatta.

This time Australia’s Olympian and CST team member Nathan Outteridge, has beaten a strong fleet of 85 boats to become the 2010 European Moth Champion..

Sailed on Switzerland’s Lake Silvaplana, the championship was one of the closest on record. Nathan and fallow CST sailor Bora Gulari were the standouts from the rest of the fleet. Last time these two met, Bora was victorious taking the World Champion crown in USA. This year Nathan came back in a new boat sporting a prototype “Elite” series mast from CST, and experienced great speed improvement to win the championship by 2 points.

The next big event on the Moth calendar is the 2011 World Championship to be sailed from Belmont 16ft Sailing Club on Nathan’s home waters of Lake Macquarie. It should be a great contest between these two sailors, however past World Champions like John Harris could also cause an upset. The top 10 is likely to be made up of ex World and Olympic Champions.

Rowing Oars Break Test

By All News, Marine News, Media

CST composites has been supplying rowing oar shafts for Jac Oars since 2007,  however we have recently undertaken more development work in order to compare CST’s filament wound tubes versus opposition fabric wrapped tubes.

A number of “cantilevered” tests was performed on both opposition and CST shafts where both deflection data and breaking loads were recorded.

The data was conclusive, it showed CST filament wound shafts to have a 25% higher ultimate load while being 11% lighter.

The secret to superiority of filament wound products lies in its high fibre to resin ratio, uncrimped fibre paths and accuracy of our computer controlled process.

New Carbon Fibre Spreaders For I14 Class

By All News, Marine News

After the success Archie Massey and Dan Wilsdon had winning the 2010 world championships with a CST HM2 mast, we saw the need to develop a full component package for this increasingly popular mast.

Part of this development has been a new carbon fibre gooseneck fitting and more recently new resin infused carbon fibre spreaders. Attachment points for stay/trap wires have been incorporated while the finish is in “clear carbon”.

The spreaders are available for purchase with HM2 masts, please contact us for more information.

New Product Testing Machine

By All News, Industrial News, Marine News

CST has taken delivery of a new Instron universal testing machine.   This machine allows testing of our products in tension, compression, bending and torsion.  It can test to 250kN maximum load, various strain rates and also test cyclic loading.

Understanding the properties of materials and finished components is essential to correctly engineer products that offer the ultimate in performance and reliability.  We can obtain accurate test data on different fibre, resin and laminate configurations in house.

The machine will enhance CST’s existing quality assurance program and assist in ongoing research and development in the composites field.

Nathan Outteridge Wins NSW Moth Championship

By All News, Marine News

CST team sailor and 2009 Olympian Nathan Outteridge has come away with yet another title in the International Moth class.

The regatta was hosted by Belmont 16ft Sailing Club and attracted a strong fleet of 38 boats.

Nathan dominated the racing on his home waters of Lake Macquarie, to win the title on 8 points with 6 first places.

Both Nathan and fellow CST team sailor David Lister (who finished 3rd), used CST Nano Spars from our “Nano Pro” range.

The focus now shifts to European championship in Italy followed by 2011 Worlds hosted by the Belmont club as well.

With plenty of sail development taking place, CST is also working closely with Raptor Sails on developments for the smallest diameter Moth mast on the market, the Nano 5.
